Imagine the worst storm you have ever seen swept across your house last night, and you wake up to a draft. You go outside to assess the damage, but your roof looks like just that: a roof. You know something is wrong with your roof, but can’t tell where the damage is. How can you figure it out? That is the question we will answer in this blog post.
Internal Damage
You have two main areas to assess when checking for damage to your roof: indoors and outdoors. Indoors typically includes ceilings and walls. Check for water damage indoors starting with the highest floor since it is most vulnerable. Water damage could look like discolored stains, bubbling paint, light mold, or even a drip. Next, if you have an access point, check your insulation. If it is wet, or you find any of the signs of water damage to ceilings or walls, call a roofing expert.
External Damage
The outdoor view of your roof can also tell you a lot about any damage it may have sustained. Here, you should look for missing shingles. This can tell you a lot about which specific area of the roof is damaged. If you notice gaps in your shingles and find them by the front door, it is likely the area of the roof by the front door is damaged. Another important piece to think about is granule loss. Granules are the small minerals on asphalt shingles that protect them from wear and tear. If there is a noticeable lack of granules on a group of shingles, that area is likely one you would like to inspect further.
